Hip and Knee Pain Q & A

Why might hip or knee pain develop?

Weight-bearing joints like the hips and knees are vulnerable to injuries and diseases that can limit your ability to sit comfortably, walk, exercise, or perform everyday activities.

Hip and knee damage may be acute (happen suddenly) or chronic (develop over time and continue or worsen).

If hip or knee pain limits your movement, prevents you from getting enough sleep, or affects your work or home life, contact the Orthopedic Urgent Care Aventura team. They can identify the underlying cause and improve joint function so you can return to a more active life.

What conditions commonly cause pain in the hips or knees?

The Orthopedic Urgent Care Aventura team treats various conditions that cause hip and knee pain, including:

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis tends to develop later in life after years of joint use. The articular cartilage protecting the bone ends in your joints erodes, and the raw bones rub on one another, causing inflammation. Several other types of arthritis can also affect the hips and knees including rheumatoid arthritis and post-traumatic arthritis.

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)

FAI can develop if extra bone tissue grows on the femoral head at the top of your thigh bone or the acetabulum, a socket in your pelvis. The excess tissue affects the way your hip joint functions, causing the bones to rub against one another when you move, resulting in joint damage.

Fractures and dislocations

Fractures are breaks in the bone. Dislocations occur when your hip joint or knee joint comes out of its socket.

Bursitis

Bursae are sacs full of fluid that cushion your joints. Irritation from overuse or rubbing creates inflammation and pain in the bursae, a condition called bursitis. Both the knee joints and hip joints contain bursae.

Meniscal tears

The meniscus cartilage in your knees provides shock absorbency. It can tear under sufficient strain, weakening the joint and causing acute knee pain.

Runner’s knee

Runner’s knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome) describes pain around the patella (kneecap) and the front of your knee. It’s common in athletes but can also affect non-athletes. The pain and stiffness that runner’s knee causes can make climbing stairs, kneeling, and many other everyday activities difficult.

Orthopedic Urgent Care Aventura also commonly treats hip and knee pain that develops from participating in CrossFit.

How are hip and knee pain diagnosed?

A hip or knee pain diagnosis begins with a medical history review and a physical exam. Your Orthopedic Urgent Care Aventura provider asks about your symptoms, including when they started and what makes them better or worse.

They examine the affected joint and watch how you move. Your provider might also recommend X-rays to see what’s going on inside the joint. Orthopedic Urgent Care Aventura has onsite digital X-ray technology for added convenience and fast results.

How are hip and knee pain treated?

Orthopedic Urgent Care Aventura’s orthopedic specialists treat hip and knee pain using a conservative and minimally invasive approach. Treatments vary depending on your condition’s cause and severity but may include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Vitamin injections and supplements
  • Custom orthotic footwear inserts
  • Joint injections
  • Hyaluronic acid (HA) injections
  • Walking aids
  • Casting, splinting, or bracing

Severe knee and hip injuries or disease damage that isn’t repairable might require surgery. If your provider determines this is the case with your hip or knee pain, they refer you to an expert orthopedic surgeon.

Orthopedic Urgent Care Aventura welcomes walk-in patients, but you can call in advance to let the team know that you’re on your way.
